FIGHT YOUR TRAFFIC TICKET?
Driver Safety Rating
Driver Safety Rating
If you live here and you have a Manitoba driver’s licence
Your DSR and resulting premiums change based on your driving record over the past year, including any traffic convictions, at-fault claims or alcohol- or drug-related administrative suspensions. On your vehicle premium, you could save between five and 33 per cent. On your driver’s licence premium, you could save up to $30 off the full cost of $45.
If you are a new Manitoba driver with your first driver’s licence
You will start at the base level on the DSR scale for both vehicle and driver’s licence premiums. After that, for each year you drive safely, you will move up the scale and start saving. Or youll move down the scale if you show any high-risk driving behaviours.
How the scale works
Each year* we will send you a notice showing where you are on the scale and what you owe for the next year. We place you on the scale using your previous DSR level and your driving record from the past year. Safe driving behaviour will move you up the scale. High-risk driving, including traffic convictions, at-fault claims or alcohol- or drug-related administrative suspensions, will move you down the scale. Moving up the scale usually results in lower premiums. Moving down the scale usually means higher premiums.
Distracted Driving
Distracted driving means any activity that diverts your attention from the road. Being distracted, even for just a few seconds, is all it can take to cause a fatal crash.
If you are caught, you will receive a three-day licence suspension for a first offence and a seven-day suspension for subsequent offences. Upon conviction, you will also receive a $672 fine and five demerits.

Dangerous Driving
The law interprets the term dangerous driving more broadly nowadays. Some of the circumstances where dangerous driving charges are commonly being laid may surprise you. A conviction for dangerous driving results in ten demerits and higher Autopac premiums. It also means a hefty fine, licence suspension and maybe even time in jail. Keep your eyes on the road and drive safely.

Speeding
A speeding violation of up to 49 km/h over the posted speed limit moves you down the DSR scale two levels. If you are travelling 50 km/h or more over the limit, the penalty is 10 levels.
The safer you drive, the higher you move on the scale and the more money you save. Your position on Manitoba’s 36-level Driver Safety Rating (DSR) scale depends on your driving record.
